The Russian Federation is a transcontinental country extending over much of northern Eurasia. Russia shares land borders with the following countries (counterclockwise from northwest to southeast): Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania (via Kaliningrad Region), Poland (via Kaliningrad Region), Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia and North Korea. It also borders the Arctic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the Caspian Sea, the Baltic Sea, and the Black Sea. Russia’s Far East comes close to the United States (Alaska) and Japan.
At 17,075,400 square kilometers (6,592,800 sq mi) of space, Russia is the largest country in the world, covering more than one eighth of the Earth’s land area; with more than 141 million people, it is the ninth largest by population. Russia extends across the whole of northern Asia and 40% of Russia has the world's greatest reserves of mineral and energy resources, and is considered an energy superpower. It has the world's largest forest reserves and its lakes contain approximately one-quarter of the world's unfrozen fresh water.

There are 11 time zones in Russia. The time difference by Greenwich Mean Time varies from +2 hours in Kaliningrad to + 12 hours in Kamchatka and Chukotka. Russia's climate is very diverse, ranging from sub-tropical at the Black Sea to extremely continental in Siberia and Arctic in the Far North; but most of the country lies within the zone of Temperate Climate.
Russia is a federal republic. The head of state is President, but the executive power is also exercised by the Government under a Prime Minister. The legislative power belongs to the Federal Assembly which consists of two houses: the Federation Council and the State Duma.
The Russian Federation is multinational state and includes 83 federal subjects, out of them 21 republics, 6 territories, 49 regions, 1 autonomous region, 10 autonomous districts, and 2 cities of federal subordination: Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Russia following the break up of the Soviet Union in 1991, inherited the legal body of the Soviet Union. It has one of the world's fastest growing major economies and has the world's eleventh largest GDP by nominal GDP or seventh largest by purchasing power parity. Russia is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, a member of the G8, and the SCO, Leading member of the Commonwealth of Independent States, etc. It is one of the five World Nuclear Powers.
For the development of business and making it feel more comfortable on the Russian market, the State promotes property protection laws, enforces statutory and healthy rules of business relations for all businessmen and investors (including foreign), supports forming of federal and regional systems of insurance, including insurance of business and investment risks, creation of regional and international securities markets, real estate markets, specialized wholesale markets, etc.
